Talent wise, this deal is just stupid, quality beats quantity nearly every time. Money wise, how does it help the Magic to dump Lewis' contract, you will still be over the cap with no ability to sign a free agents.

Money wise, how does it help the Magic to dump Lewis' contract, you will still be over the cap with no ability to sign a free agents. You're correct. On paper, this is a lopsided move. Rashard is the greatest player in the transaction. This move wasn't made to acquire Rasual Butler or Steve Blake though... This move is the first of a set. If the TC consents, I can guarantee the Magic will go into FA with MVP/DPOY candidate Dwight Howard and All Star PG Jameer Nelson as their base, and with the cap space to sign a max FA. That is not an issue, at all. And our hopes are not purely aligned with signing a max player. Our hope is to create the flexibility to reconstruct a team that is locked into a supporting cast that is devolving in Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter. With that flexibility, there are a great number of directions the Magic can pursue. At this point, the only direction is another loss to the Lakers or Celtics, with no potential for upward mobility.

I doubt things will work out like you want them to. Lets say if this plays out. You trade Carter and Gortat after this deal, two big contracts. You have these guys during free agency:
Dwight Howard Jameer Nelson Mickael Pietrus Brandon Bass Ryan Howard Mardy Collins Bobby Brown
Thats 42mil, so you have 16mil to use in free agency, say you get Joe Johnson or someone, or maybe Rudy Gay. Your lineup will be..
Dwight Howard Brandon Bass Joe Johnson Mickael Pietrus Jameer Nelson
Or slide Rudy Gay in there.. But now you have no money left, can't resign Matt Barnes or JJ Redick, can't use MLE, only minimums. Your 6th man would be Ryan Howard and your rotation would consist of Bobby Brown Mardy Collins and whatever minimums you can sign. That is many steps backwards in my opinion, and there is a very good chance you will strike out in free agency and get noone.

I expect I will begin FA with around 25,000,000. Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson will be under contract, as will Ryan Anderson, and J.J. Redick has a TO or QO. Judging by current negotiations, I anticipate by that point I will acquire an additional 2 to 3 solid, and low cost, young players as well. My 2010 First may or may not provide another. That is to say there will be a base of talent in Orlando as free agency begins. This will not be a Miami Heat scenario. I am expecting as many as 8 developed NBA players, but if that busts, with our space, 6 will work as well.
This move is not purely about the FA of 2010. This is not an all in strategy. I believe this team, with a tremendous base of talent, and a great location(if that comes into play) will be a favorite to land an elite FA. Though if that is not the case, there are other options. The point of the moves are for the team to be in a position of flexibility. We will not break the bank to sign a player that will be on a terrible contract from their first day on the job like the two mentioned in the example, or like Lewis and Carter. In a doomsday scenario, we will preserve our flexibility and target assets. In my view, that scenario will be preferable to the present one.
The main point is that the Magic are not in the favorable position that is being portrayed. Are the Magic actually a real contender presently? After watching their performance against the Lakers and the Celtics, I say not. And what about 3 years from now? The team will still be above the cap and will not have been in a favorable position in the draft. Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter will be 3 years older, and if you saw their performance towards the end of last year, and against Boston, how bright is that future? Lewis and Carter are not even legit 2nd options today. And so, what is actually at risk here? The Magic may sign an elite FA. Or bust in FA and sign assets. Both are favorable scenarios to the future, or lack thereof of, of the presently constructed team. If you're gifted with a player like Howard, you're obligated to construct a champion, and that is the intent here, not a team that is destined to 2nd, or 4th, or in 3 years, 8th, at best. Not everyone may prefer my strategy, but hopefully the TC recognizes that there is a developed strategy at play here and will not stand in the way of that being seen through.
And thanks for the time.

Rashard has a very nasty contract. We've seen him get traded for expirings (to me) in D5, so I think this is no different... he really is one of the most overpayed players in the league.
Orlando seems to be very knowledgeable and has a plan, so I will accept pending LAC's acceptance

Well I wouldn't do this, you clearly have seriously thought about where you want to take this team, so I accept.

The main point here is whether Alex James is committed to this project in the long term, and I think he is - judging by the length of his explanations.
Whilst new Rockets GM Daryl Morey can trade the main core of his team in a deal which is relatively fair; I will probably reject that Rockets/Warriors trade because Morey is a newbie here, instantly broke a rule by posting a link to another sim league even though I told him to read the rules, and has shown no indication that he's here for the long haul.
Alex James here though is OKC GM over at D5 and has posted lengthy explanations here and in a PM to me. I also understand his reasoning behind restructuring the Magic. I think Otis Smith could've done a much better job in real life, and although I think the Magic could get a lot more for these trades and would be better off shopping around for better deals, I accept nonetheless.
